WW II ammunition kills man

MEDAN, North Sumatra: A man was killed when ammunition,
believed to be left over from World War II, exploded in his
hands, spokesman for the North Sumatra police Lt. Col. Leo
Sukardi said yesterday.

Leo said scavenger Abdul Jalil found the big, bottle-like
missile. Jalil was alone in his house when it exploded in his
hands, his wife and two children were out at the time.

Leo said the missile was probably a relic of World War II,
assuming that there is still an abundance of similar explosives
in the city.

Neighbors of the victim told The Jakarta Post that Jalil had
told them he had found the missile while he was scavenging. He
did not realize that it was dangerous, they said. (24/imn)
