Wuling Studies Affordable PHEV Under Rp 300 Million, Ready to Target Mass Market
JAKARTA – Chinese automaker Wuling Motors is opening opportunities to introduce a more affordable plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in Indonesia. This step signals that electrification will not only target the upper-middle segment but also the mass market with a price tag below Rp 300 million.
According to Wuling Motors’ Marketing Operation Director, Ricky Christian, the company’s current PHEV lineup remains in the middle to upper segment, thus not yet reaching consumers with broader purchasing power.
For context, Wuling currently offers a PHEV model in Indonesia through the Darion PHEV. This vehicle is marketed in the upper-middle segment with prices ranging from Rp 439 million to Rp 499 million (OTR), positioning it still quite far from the category of affordable electrified vehicles.
He added that Wuling does not rule out the possibility of introducing a PHEV with a more competitive price, including below Rp 300 million. However, the plan is still in the study and adjustment phase to meet domestic market needs.
According to Ricky, Wuling’s approach to product development is not solely about technology but also about how the vehicle can be accepted by Indonesian consumers.
Therefore, various studies are continuously conducted to understand market characteristics, including opportunities to introduce PHEV in lower price segments.
“The most important thing is that Wuling’s main goal is also to produce products that can be well received by the Indonesian market,” he said.
