Wuling and Grab Expand EV Fleet to Drive Growth
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Wuling Motors and Grab Indonesia have expanded their electric vehicle partnership through the handover of a Wuling New BinguoEV Lite fleet to GrabRentals, in a bid to accelerate EV adoption and strengthen the low-emission mobility ecosystem in Indonesia. The collaboration was marked by a fleet handover ceremony in Jakarta. This step is part of both companies’ strategy to broaden the use of electric vehicles in the app-based transportation sector, a segment considered to have significant potential to accelerate national EV market penetration. Wuling Motors President Director Tang Wensheng said in an official statement on Friday that the collaboration reflects a shared long-term vision between the automotive manufacturer and the digital mobility service provider. Tang noted that the partnership opens opportunities to develop more efficient transportation solutions while expanding the benefits of electric vehicles for drivers and the public. He added that cross-industry collaboration is a crucial factor in accelerating EV acceptance in the domestic market, which is still in a growth phase. The company targets a threefold increase in its EV fleet by the end of 2026, reflecting accelerated investment in electric fleets to meet growing market demand. GrabRentals Indonesia Director Halim Wijaya said the cooperation with Wuling helps ensure fleet availability to support the expansion of electric vehicle services. Through a rental scheme, drivers who do not own a private car can access electric vehicles at a lower initial cost compared to direct ownership. This model is seen as capable of reducing barriers to EV adoption, particularly for driver-partners who are sensitive to upfront investment costs. Beyond fleet provision, the two companies are also collaborating on after-sales services, technical support, and training programmes for drivers and mechanics. This approach demonstrates that developing the EV ecosystem depends not only on vehicle sales but also on the readiness of supporting service infrastructure. Collaboration between automotive manufacturers and digital platforms is becoming increasingly important amid rising competition in Indonesia’s EV market, which is now a focus of industry investment. With more electric fleets being used in daily services, the opportunity to accelerate the transition towards sustainable transportation in Indonesia is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
