Denpasar (ANTARA) – The World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia think tank has chosen Bali to host the global board’s annual meeting in July 2027, as the province is considered strongly committed to reducing carbon emissions.

“Next year, the trustees from across the World Resources Institute’s global board — an internationally renowned NGO working on climate and sustainability — will hold a meeting in Bali in July,” said Mari Elka Pangestu, a member of WRI Indonesia’s board of trustees and Deputy Chair of the National Economic Council, in Denpasar on Sunday evening.

Mari Elka said Bali was chosen because it is a tangible example of a region seriously pursuing its target of net zero emissions by 2045 through a clear regional action plan.

WRI Indonesia has recorded several transition programmes under way on the island, including an initiative to develop low-emissions areas, first launched in Sanur and five other locations.

The international board includes business professionals and figures with extensive experience in public policymaking. The strategic meeting will also bring together country directors from 12 regions where WRI runs programmes.

Mari Elka hopes representatives from countries including China, Brazil and India will help raise the profile of sustainable development practices being implemented in Bali.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster welcomed the plan to bring climate experts from around the world to the island, saying the provincial administration was fully prepared to support the meeting.

“This is very much in line with the provincial government’s policies to protect a clean and sustainable environment. I am very pleased to receive this information, and we will give it our full support,” the governor said.

The local government considers the international meeting consistent with its vision of environmentally conscious development, which it has pursued consistently at the local level.

The next phase of the campaign includes expanding the use of clean energy, shifting to greener transport, improving organic farming systems and tightening controls on plastic waste.

Koster said the presence of global environmental leaders would not only help promote Bali internationally, but also reinforce its standing as a respected world tourism destination.
