Wrecked Calya: Driver's Reckless Actions Cause Chaos in Central Jakarta
A black Toyota Calya was driven recklessly, going the wrong way and colliding with several vehicles on Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta. The car was briefly targeted by an angry mob, resulting in significant damage.
In photos obtained by detikcom, the black car is seen with a shattered rear window and damage to the front. “As a result of the incident, the Toyota Calya sustained scratches on the right side. One driver was injured, and a motorcycle sustained damage to the front and right side,” said the Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, in a statement on Thursday (February 26, 2026).
The windshield is cracked, and the front bumper is damaged due to the driver’s reckless actions. The incident occurred on Jalan Dr. Sutomo, near the Pasar Baru bus stop in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (February 25) at approximately 5:00 PM. The driver was driving recklessly and going the wrong way, colliding with several vehicles.
Several vehicles were reported to have sustained damage as a result of the driver’s actions. One motorcyclist was also reported to be injured. The driver was apprehended by residents and police at the scene. The driver, identified as HM (25), has been named a suspect.
“He has been named a suspect,” said the Chief of the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Reynold EP Hutagalung, when asked for confirmation. The Head of Traffic of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Komarudin, said that the suspect is being charged under Article 311 of Law Number 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation.
“For the traffic violation, the suspect is charged under Article 311, paragraphs 1, 2, and 3, for driving a vehicle in a manner that endangers other road users. If it reaches paragraph 3, the penalty is up to four years in prison,” said Komarudin.
The text of Article 311:
Anyone who intentionally drives a Motor Vehicle in a manner or condition that endangers the lives or property of others shall be punished with a maximum imprisonment of 1 (one) year or a maximum fine of Rp3,000,000 (three million rupiah).
In the event that the act as referred to in paragraph (1) results in a traffic accident with damage to Vehicles and/or property as referred to in Article 229 paragraph (2), the perpetrator shall be punished with a maximum imprisonment of 2 (two) years or a maximum fine of Rp4,000,000 (four million rupiah).
In the event that the act as referred to in paragraph (1) results in a traffic accident with minor injuries and damage to Vehicles and/or property as referred to in Article 229 paragraph (3), the perpetrator shall be punished with a maximum imprisonment of 4 (four) years or a maximum fine of Rp8,000,000 (eight million rupiah).
In addition to the traffic violations, the suspect HM will also be investigated for other potential crimes, including alleged license plate forgery and the discovery of a sharp weapon and a toy gun.
