World's Most Generous Countries: Where Does Indonesia Rank?

A number of countries worldwide feature in the list of the most generous nations, with Indonesia included. Where does Indonesia rank?

The data comes from the 2025 World Giving Report (WGR) conducted by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), a UK-based international non-profit philanthropy organisation.

Unlike previous surveys, the 2025 WGR no longer asks whether individuals have donated or helped others. Under the old methodology, Indonesia ranked highly due to its ‘gotong royong’ (mutual aid) culture.

The new methodology focuses on the average percentage of income donated, resulting in several developed nations not making the top ranks.

The top 10 most generous countries are:

  1. Nigeria - 2.83%

  2. Egypt - 2.45%

  3. China - 2.19%

  4. Ghana - 2.19%

  5. Kenya - 2.13%

  6. Uganda - 2.04%

  7. India - 1.92%

  8. United Arab Emirates - 1.92%

  9. Qatar - 1.92%

  10. Malawi - 1.80%

Indonesia scored 1.55%, placing it at 21st position.

Meanwhile, developed nations such as the United States also failed to feature in the top ranks due to the methodology change. The US ranks 31st with a 0.97% score.

Similarly, European countries including Germany, France, Sweden, and the Netherlands did not make the top tier.
