The World Vocational and Technical Education Development Conference 2026 officially opened in Tianjin, northern China, last Friday. The conference was attended by government officials, diplomatic envoys, and representatives of international organisations and educational institutions from various countries.

Under the theme “Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET): Embracing Change Together, Formulating Standards and Creating the Future”, the event brought together participants from different countries to discuss the transformation and future direction of vocational and technical education.

According to the organisers, the conference includes five main items on its agenda: an opening session, a plenary session, ministerial discussions, parallel sessions and a closing session. It also features three accompanying events: a symposium marking the 10th anniversary of the Luban Workshops, a special exhibition on Chinese vocational education, and the final of the World Vocational Colleges Skills Competition.

This year’s competition is the largest in its history, involving 9,391 teams and 36,000 participants from 78 countries across five continents, the organisers said. In addition to the four overseas divisions previously established, the competition has added an Oceania division this year. It also introduces traditional Chinese craft techniques.

Through high-level skills contests, participants showcase the value and appeal of vocational education.

One of the conference’s main events was the official launch of a global framework for vocational education standards, developed under China’s leadership and impetus.

Compiled on the basis of Chinese vocational education practices and the experience of various countries, the Framework of World Vocational and Technical Education Standards is described as the first of its kind globally. It covers several areas of international concern in vocational education, including values, systems, governance, support and implementation measures.

According to the organisers, the framework could strengthen international exchanges and cooperation in vocational education. The initiative is also expected to advance China’s engagement in global vocational education—from human-resource exchanges to project cooperation, and now towards a role in leading the formulation of standards.

The event, which runs until Saturday, is organised by China’s Ministry of Education, the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO and the Tianjin Municipal Government.
