Amid global financial market dynamics and domestic market challenges, Indonesia is seen as having significant potential to develop into a world-class trading hub capable of competing with Singapore and Hong Kong. This optimism was expressed by Dato’ Dr. Nazri Khan (DDNK), a Malaysian trader who won the World Cup Trading Championship Robbins Cup 2024. He stated that Indonesia’s strong economic fundamentals provide a solid foundation to become one of the largest trading and investment hubs in the Asia region. Currently, Indonesia’s financial markets face several pressures, including a declining Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) noted by global index providers and a depreciating rupiah against the US dollar, raising questions about the country’s readiness to advance as an international trading centre. However, DDNK views these as short-term challenges that do not alter Indonesia’s long-term prospects. “As a world champion in technical analysis trading, I see Indonesia’s market has high potential to become a world-class trading hub like the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Singapore Stock Exchange,” said DDNK. He added that Indonesia possesses strategic advantages difficult for other nations to match. As a G20 member and one of the world’s largest economies, Indonesia has a vast economy with a strong domestic market. Moreover, with a population nearing 300 million, predominantly of working age, and the fastest-growing middle class globally, this demographic factor is crucial for the development of the national financial industry and capital markets. “Indonesia has a large domestic market, a young population, rapid middle-class growth, and a strategic location between China and India. If played correctly, Indonesia can compete with Singapore and Hong Kong,” he continued. Beyond demographics, Indonesia also has significant natural resource-based economic strength. It is one of the world’s largest producers of strategic commodities such as coal and nickel, which are vital raw materials in global industrial supply chains, including electric vehicles and new energy technologies. In the digital sector, Indonesia is increasingly strong, with a large internet and social media user base, making it one of the world’s largest digital markets. Global platforms like TikTok and Instagram list Indonesia among the countries with the largest user bases globally. However, DDNK stressed that to achieve international trading hub status, Indonesia must continue strengthening its financial market infrastructure and enhancing the liquidity of investment instruments available to professional market participants. “There are several areas needing improvement for the Indonesia Stock Exchange to match world-class stock markets. For professional traders like myself, a key factor is the availability of liquid products and instruments,” he explained. Enhancing market depth, diversifying investment instruments, strengthening regulations to support global competitiveness, and improving access for international investors are factors that could accelerate Indonesia’s transformation into a regional and even global financial trading hub. With a combination of economic strength, demographic dividend, abundant natural resources, and rapid digital economic growth, Indonesia has a real opportunity to become a key centre for global trade and investment in the coming decade.
