World in Danger: Global Payment Services on High Alert
The global payment network giant, Visa, has begun taking high-alert measures in response to the cyber threats posed by the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). As a form of mitigation, the company has even opened parts of the source code from its advanced technology-based cyber defence system.
Visa’s President of Technology, Rajat Taneja, revealed that the company feels compelled to remain vigilant, reflecting on various cybersecurity incidents that have occurred throughout this year. He cited vulnerabilities in Anthropic’s Mythos AI model that were exposed earlier this year, as well as incidents involving AI agent attacks on the Hugging Face platform.
He admitted that it is impossible to predict exactly how much destruction would occur if similar incidents were to strike their payment infrastructure, but thorough preparations have been implemented from an early stage.
“It is difficult to predict how bad it will be, but we have seen snippets,” Taneable explained, as quoted from Reuters on Wednesday (30/09/2026).
“Often, the trailer is the best part of a film. However, I think this is a small trailer of what the film will be like, so we must prepare and adopt a mindset that acknowledges the power of this technology,” he added.
Taneja also warned that future cyberattacks are predicted to become highly adaptive. Such attacks are assessed to be capable of evolving autonomously without any human intervention, thereby providing ‘superpowers’ to hackers.
“If the adversary has an [AI] agent, then the defence must also have an agent. Otherwise, an imbalance will occur,” he emphasised.
For context, Visa processes up to one billion payment transactions every day, with a total annual value reaching US$15 trillion. Given such a massive scale, the potential destructive power of a cyberattack is undoubtedly at a deeply concerning level.
Like many other global corporations, Visa is not closing itself off and is also utilising AI technology. The company has even begun testing the use of AI agents to simplify the online shopping process for its customers.
