Quoting from the official WHO website, every year on 7 June, the FAO and WHO, alongside national authorities, civil society, academics, and other participants worldwide, commemorate World Food Safety Day. This day highlights food safety as a shared right and responsibility, serving as a powerful opportunity for collective action.

Food safety is a shared responsibility between governments, producers, and consumers. All parties play a role, from agriculture to the dining table, to ensure that the food we consume is safe and does not harm our health. Through World Food Safety Day, the WHO continues its efforts to mainstream food safety within the public agenda and reduce the global burden of foodborne diseases.

Theme for World Food Safety Day 2026

Foodborne diseases remain a significant global burden, causing at least 200 diseases that affect health, livelihoods, education, and economies. However, most of these diseases are preventable.

The theme for World Food Safety Day 2026, ‘From burden to solutions - safe food everywhere’, highlights how data regarding diseases, their burden, and lost lives can guide actions towards focused and cost-effective solutions. Led by the WHO, this year’s campaign is dedicated to highlighting the burden of foodborne diseases and the science-based solutions that can prevent them.

At the core of the 2026 theme is the release of the latest WHO estimates on the burden of foodborne diseases, which will be published in June in a report of key findings. This will be accompanied by an interactive dashboard and an updated Global Health Observatory page featuring national estimates based on hazards, providing the first global, regional, and national estimates of foodborne diseases, deaths, and the public health burden expressed as disability-adjusted life years (DALY) from 2000 to 2021.

This report is based on globally collected data related to various hazards and foodborne disease outcomes, which will assist countries in identifying where policy priorities can be best placed.

The theme also addresses solutions to tackle the burden of foodborne diseases. The new WHO estimates will help strengthen political commitment and targeted multi-sectoral responses appropriate to the scale of the public health burden.

As the World Food Safety Day slogan reminds us every year, ‘Food safety is everyone’s responsibility’. This year’s campaign encourages everyone in the food chain, from producers to consumers, to use the available evidence—including data from the upcoming WHO report regarding where foodborne diseases and deaths occur and their primary drivers—and subsequently implement solutions.
