History of World Environment Day
According to the United Nations, the commemoration of World Environment Day is rooted in a long history of international movements, first initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) during a major conference in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972. A year later, in 1973, World Environment Day was officially observed on 5 June annually by millions of people in over 150 countries, participating to encourage changes in both domestic and international policies to address the Earth’s environmental crisis.
Theme of World Environment Day 2026
World Environment Day was first commemorated in 1974 with the theme ‘Only One Earth’. However, over time, the themes have continuously adapted to the environmental challenges faced by the world. In 2026, UNEP will adopt the theme ‘Climate Action’ as the focus of its celebration. This theme serves as a call for the urgency of real action and global cooperation in facing the increasingly palpable impacts of climate change, while also pushing for accelerated efforts towards a more sustainable future. The 2026 World Environment Day celebrations will be hosted by the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the event set to take place in the city of Baku on 5 June 2026.
World Environment Day 2026 Theme in Indonesia
In line with the global focus, World Environment Day 2026 in Indonesia will carry the theme ‘Time to Work for the Climate’, as established by the Indonesian Environmental Control Agency through Circular Letter Number 09 of 2026. This theme serves as a reminder that the sustainability of the Earth is a shared responsibility. Through this theme, all elements of society are invited to take concrete action in facing climate change to create a more comfortable and sustainable environment for present and future generations.
