Workplace Safety Increasingly Viewed as a Strategic Investment in the Mining Industry
Amid increasing mining activity and investment in the natural resources sector, mining companies are increasingly required to maintain productivity without neglecting workplace safety aspects. For an industry with high operational risks, safety is no longer seen merely as a regulatory obligation, but also as part of a strategy to maintain operational continuity and business efficiency.
Observing this development, PT Wahana Safety Indonesia (WSI) participated in the Mining Expo Balikpapan 2026 by presenting various workplace safety solutions designed to help the industry reduce operational risks while enhancing protection for workers in the field.
As one of the sectors contributing around 6–7 percent to Indonesia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the mining industry plays a crucial role in supporting investment, downstream processing, job creation, and national economic growth. Yet behind this contribution, the sector also faces complex safety challenges. Disruptions caused by work incidents not only impact workers, but can also affect productivity, production targets, and company operational costs.
In line with the development of the modern mining industry, the utilisation of safety technology has also increased. The use of gas detection systems, real-time monitoring, and various technology-based safety solutions has become part of companies’ efforts to identify risks more quickly and improve worker protection on-site.
“Many companies are now beginning to view safety from a different perspective. It is not just about regulatory compliance, but how safety can help maintain productivity and ensure operations run smoothly. Ultimately, safety and business performance go hand in hand,” said Fransiskus B. Hermanto, Sales and Marketing Director of PT Wahana Safety Indonesia, in a statement on Wednesday (10/6).
According to Frans, the industry’s increased attention to technology-based safety solutions shows a shift in how companies manage operational risks.
“In recent years, we have seen an increased need for solutions such as gas detection and fall protection, particularly from the mining sector. This indicates that companies are increasingly aware of the importance of preventative measures to reduce risks before incidents occur and to maintain their operational continuity,” he continued.
This momentum also coincides with WSI’s journey, as in August 2026 the company will mark its 26th anniversary. For more than two decades, WSI has supported various national industrial sectors through the provision of workplace safety solutions, occupational health and safety education, the development of safety culture, and the implementation of safety technology in high-risk work environments.
At the Mining Expo Balikpapan 2026, WSI presented a range of integrated safety solutions, from Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Fall Protection Systems, and Fire Protection Solutions, to Gas Detection System technology such as WatchGas, designed to provide maximum protection in high-risk work environments.
Through this participation, WSI also continues to strengthen the National Safety Movement (Gerakan Keselamatan Nasional/GKN), an initiative conceived by the company to encourage increased awareness, culture, and implementation of workplace safety across various Indonesian industrial sectors through education, collaboration, and the application of sustainable safety practices.
Amid the demands for higher efficiency and production targets, mining companies are required to place safety as part of their business processes. With the right approach, safety not only protects workers but also helps maintain productivity, reduces potential operational disruptions, and supports long-term business sustainability.
