Working Visit to Riau Police, Environment Minister Pushes for National Adoption of Green Policing
This visit marks the first since Jumhur Hidayat was appointed as minister. Minister Jumhur was welcomed by Riau Police Chief Inspector General Herry Heryawan at the Riau Regional Police Headquarters in Pekanbaru on Monday (4/5/2026).
During the visit, the Minister of the Environment was accompanied by Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Great Institute, Syahganda Nainggolan, and Founder of the Tumbuh Institute, Rocky Gerung, who have been actively promoting the strengthening of environmental ethics perspectives, social solidarity, and ecological awareness in public spaces.
This visit serves as a strong affirmation of the importance of cross-sectoral synergy in addressing environmental challenges in Indonesia, with Riau as one of the strategic focal points.
In his remarks before the minister, the Riau Police Chief outlined environmental issues in Riau that cannot be viewed partially but must be seen as interconnected matters of security, economy, and social justice. Therefore, Inspector General Herry Heryawan introduced a breakthrough through the Green Policing approach.
The Green Policing programme initiated by the Riau Provincial Police not only emphasises law enforcement but also builds collective awareness through changes in mindset, behaviour, and organisational culture.
On this occasion, Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat expressed high appreciation for the progressive steps taken by the Riau Provincial Police. He even assessed that the Green Policing approach presented had exceeded his expectations.
“I listened to the entire presentation, and I feel there is nothing more for me to speechify about here. The requirement to be a minister is to be intelligent, and I feel what is happening today will be adopted by me,” said Jumhur.
Minister Jumhur Appreciates Green Policing
He emphasised that the Green Policing concept developed by the Riau Provincial Police is an excellent model worthy of national replication.
“This is very good. If Green Policing happens everywhere, in every institution, I think there would be no need for the Ministry of Environment anymore. This is extraordinary,” he asserted.
Furthermore, Jumhur conveyed his commitment to pushing for the full implementation of the concepts presented in various regions across Indonesia.
“I will ensure together with colleagues in the ministry how what is being worked on today can truly happen throughout the regions,” he said.
He also assessed that the presence of the central government through this visit is a form of respect for the people of Riau, as well as an effort to strengthen attention to environmental issues in the region.
“By bringing the Police Chief and all ranks here, this is part of the Republic’s respect for the people of Riau. We want to ensure there is real improvement, including in environmental indices,” he stated.
Meanwhile, regarding mining issues, Jumhur highlighted the importance of distinguishing between field actors and the main players in the illegal economic chain. “It is important that we push for the prompt issuance of people’s small-scale mining business permits, so that there is legal certainty and protection for the community,” he explained.
The series of activities also included environmental-themed artistic performances, screenings of case revelation videos, and technical presentations on the implementation of Green Policing and Waste to Energy (WTE) by Riau Provincial Police personnel. This momentum was also linked to Labour Day commemorations through a tumpeng-cutting ceremony with worker union representatives.
The visit concluded with a group photo session and a reception with all invited guests. The presence of the Minister of Environment at the Riau Provincial Police affirms that collaboration between the central government and law enforcement apparatus is key to realising sustainable and just environmental governance.
