Working Abroad: Where Should You Pay Tax?

Nowadays, work does not always have to be in the same location as the company. Technological developments enable someone to work for a foreign company, become an international freelancer, or earn income from various countries. But if you earn income from abroad, where exactly should the tax be paid?

The answer relates to the concept of international taxation, particularly regarding double taxation. Double taxation occurs when the same income is taxed by two or more countries. For example, a person residing in Indonesia earns income from a company abroad. The country where the company is located levies tax because the income originates there, while Indonesia can also levy tax because the individual is an Indonesian taxpayer.

This can become a double taxation problem as more economic activities cross national borders. If not properly regulated, taxpayers may feel burdened because they have to pay tax more than once on the same income.

To address this issue, countries establish cooperation through Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements. These agreements aim to determine which country has the right to collect tax or provide tax relief to prevent repeated taxation. With such rules in place, cross-border economic activities can proceed more fairly and provide certainty for taxpayers.

However, understanding of international taxation is still relatively low among the public. In fact, more and more young people are working digitally, receiving income from abroad, or running global businesses. Knowledge about tax is important not only for large corporations but also for individuals who are starting to have cross-border income.

Ultimately, double taxation shows that an increasingly connected world requires a tax system that is also capable of adapting. Tax is not just about paying obligations, but also about how countries work together to create fair rules amidst global economic developments.
