A construction worker discovered a pineapple grenade while digging the ground for a toilet foundation at the Karstubing tourist attraction in Surobayan, Argomulyo, Sedayu, Bantul. The Gegana bomb squad from the Yogyakarta Regional Police (Polda DIY) subsequently carried out a controlled disposal of the device.

Head of Public Relations for the Bantul Police, Iptu Rita Hidayanto, explained that the discovery occurred on Monday (6/7/2026) at around 8:00 AM local time. Two workers were digging the foundation for a toilet at the karst tubing site when they unearthed the grenade. Upon finding the device, the workers did not dare to move it and immediately reported the discovery to the site management, who then contacted the Sedayu Police.

Following the report, the Gegana team arrived at the location to evacuate the grenade. Initial examination by the Polda DIY Gegana team confirmed the object was an active pineapple-type hand grenade. The device was found at a depth of 10 metres and was still in a live condition, necessitating immediate disposal to ensure public safety.

The Gegana team and Sedayu Police personnel first secured and sterilised the area. The first controlled detonation was carried out at 12:50 PM local time, but it failed to destroy the grenade completely, only damaging its outer casing. A second disposal was conducted at 1:05 PM, which successfully destroyed the entire device. The entire operation proceeded safely and orderly, with the situation remaining conducive. According to local residents, the grenade is suspected to be a relic from the war era that had been buried at the site.
