Workers protest at manpower agency

BOGOR: More than 500 workers from PT Idea Karya Indah (IKI) arrived at the Bogor Regency Manpower and Social Welfare Agency on Monday at about 10 a.m., demanding the agency push the company to pay their outstanding salaries and bonuses.

The workers had previously protested at the Bogor Police Precinct, accusing the police of protecting the company's general manager, Agung Nugroho. Agung had been taken hostage by the workers since Wednesday but finally freed by police on Thursday.

Wiwin, one of the protesting workers, said that letters outlining the plight of the workers had been sent to the agency, but there had been no response.

Head of the agency, R. Suherdis, argued that the agency only had eight supervisors, making it impossible to monitor the 1,962 companies in the regency. -- Antara
