Workers demand wage raise
JAKARTA (JP): Around 150 workers of CV Matahari Terbit marched
to the City Council building yesterday to air their grievances
over the shoe and sandal company's unwillingness to comply with
the government's decision to raise the minimum daily wage.
Iwan.S, one of the workers, said they filed a complaint with
the City Council in hopes of pressuring the company's management
to meet their demands, Antara reported.
He said they have been on strike for two weeks and would
continue striking until the company meets their demands.
He said their daily wage is only Rp 3.900, Rp 700 short of the
minimum daily wage of Rp 4,600 announced by the government
earlier this month.
Iwan told councilors Syamsul Mu'arif and Tengku Suriansyah
that the workers also protested the dismissal of 30 of their
fellow workers. "The company fired them without severance pay,"
Iwan said. (bas)
