Workers bring fuel protests to court

JAKARTA: The Association of Public Advocates (SPR) filed a class action on Monday at the Central Jakarta District Court against the central government's decision to increase fuel prices on Oct. 1.

"We understand that the policy is an offense against the law that protects the welfare of the people," SPR coordinator FX Arif Poyuono said.

Besides President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla, the lawyers also named the Golkar Party, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), noted Muslim preacher Abdullah Gymnastiar and expert on energy Kurtubi as defendants for supporting and convincing the people to accept the fuel price increases. Fuel prices rose by an average 126.6 percent on Oct. 1. -- JP
