Worker killed in car collision
BANDUNG, West Java: Thirty-year-old Wati's hopes of
celebrating the Day of Sacrifice with her family in Banyumas,
Central Java, faded after she was killed in a collision between a
van carrying her and nine other workers with a truck in the
Padaleunyi toll road in Bandung early on Thursday.
The incident occurred when the van the workers had chartered
to take them to their home village in Banyumas, hit the rear of
the truck.
Lasyiem, another worker, suffered a fractured neck and was
taken to the Hasan Sadikin General Hospital in the city. The van
driver, Pandi, who suffered light injuries, was found shocked.
An employee of the company running the toll road said the van
hit the truck when the truck was trying to avoid a speeding
sedan.
The ten workers were on their way back from Hong Kong and
Singapore after being employed for three years in those
countries.
"We screamed when our van collided with the truck at speed. It
was really a nightmare I did not imagine experiencing when
leaving Hong Kong," said Sri, who had been sitting on the back
seat of the van. --Antara
