Worker falls to his death

JAKARTA (JP): A 20-year-old construction worker died yesterday
after falling 10 meters off a lift at the PT Pulo Gadung Steel
complex in East Jakarta.

It is thought Edi Santoso, from near Cilacap in Central Java,
slipped while in the lift used to carry construction materials at
the site, said fellow worker Nurohmad.

"I didn't see the accident with my own eyes but only heard
about it from the project supervisor," he said.

Indarto of PT Pulo Gadung Steel, which produces heavy steel
reinforced concrete, declined to give details of the accident.

"The case is being taken care of by the Cakung police
subprecinct. I wouldn't like to comment on what happened," he
said.

However he did say the company would cover the hospital
expenses incurred over dealing with the body.

An officer from the Cakung police subprecinct said that Edi
Santoso fell from a 10-meter height.

A technical high school graduate, Edi followed many of his
friends and migrated to Jakarta five months ago to find work,
said Nurohmad, who comes from the same village as Edi.

Edi died on the way to Persahabatan hospital and his body was
then taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for a post-
mortem. (04)
