Worker dies from electrocution
JAKARTA: A 27-year-old welder planning to marry later this
year died on Tuesday from electrocution in Penjaringan, North
Jakarta.
Suwarto, who was electrocuted on Monday when he was working,
was rushed to state Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. He died early on
Tuesday morning.
An autopsy by hospital morgue staff revealed that parts of his
body had been burned while the cause of death was ruled as
electrocution.
The victim's brother, Marsono, said the welder from
Purbalingga, Central Java, came to Jakarta to make money to
finance his wedding, which was scheduled to be held after the
Idul Fitri holidays in December.
"Our family was preparing for his wedding at home, but now
it's all been for nothing," Marsono said.--JP

Police urged to arrest developer
JAKARTA: City Council urged the police on Tuesday to arrest
the president of publicly listed developer PT Duta Pertiwi for
ignoring the council's summons to attend a hearing.
"The company president, S. Chandra, has ignored our summons
four times. We will ask the council leader to send a letter,
demanding the police to arrest him," chairman of Commission B for
economic affairs Syarief Zulkarnain said.
The company executive, who is a member of the Sinar Mas Group,
was summoned over reports of an alleged scam from dozens of
traders at shopping malls and inhabitants at an apartment
building developed by the firm.
ITC Mangga Dua and ITC Roxy Mas in West Jakarta, and ITC
Fatmawati and the Ambassador apartments in South Jakarta were
built by the firm.--JP

No plan to raid luxury cars

JAKARTA: The Jakarta administration said on Tuesday that it
had no authority to stop luxury automobiles on the public highway
even if the owners had failed to pay the requisite taxes on the
vehicles.
"We cannot stop such cars as the documents are not issued by
the administration, but rather the city police," the city's
revenue agency head Deden Supriadi said.
The agency earlier announced that it had secured Rp 503
billion out of its target of Rp 750 billion from taxes on luxury
cars.
A non-governmental organization, the Anti-Luxury Car Movement
(GAMM), suggested on Saturday that the administration would be
better off checking for illegal luxury cars rather than cracking
down on becak (pedicabs) and street traders.--JP.

Fewer coaches leave hundreds stranded
JAKARTA: Hundreds of people waiting to take electric trains on
the Serpong and Tanah Abang railway lines were left stranded on
Tuesday due to a reduction of coaches by the state-owned railway
company PT Kereta Api.
"They (PT KAI) should know that more people want to take the
electric trains today, being the first working day of the week,"
Antara quoted a man unable to board a four-coach train due to
overcrowding.
He said that trains serving the track usually had eight
coaches, enabling them to transport hundreds of passengers.
Antara reported that PT KAI has often reduced the number of
train coaches without any explanation.
"They actually know that such a reduction will only cause many
passengers to be stranded," the man was quoted as saying.
The news agency said that passengers were disappointed because
PT KAI made no effort to solve the problem when the number of
coaches was reduced and made no announcement about the coach
reduction.--JP
