The government will begin implementing a work-from-home (WFH) policy after the 2026 Eid al-Fitr celebrations. This step is part of an energy-saving strategy amid rising global oil prices that impact domestic fuel consumption.

This policy will apply not only to civil servants (ASN) but is also recommended for the private sector, with exceptions for public services that must continue operating in person.

The government believes this approach can serve as a temporary solution to curb energy consumption without significantly disrupting work productivity. Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, conveyed this.

He stated that the WFH regulations will be detailed soon before official implementation. “(The WFH rules) will be detailed. But after Eid, we will enforce them. For ASN and recommendations for the private sector. But not for those working in public service sectors,” Airlangga said in Jakarta on Saturday, 21 March 2026.

Airlangga emphasised that the WFH scheme will not be applied every day, but only one day per week. The government will also coordinate with relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Home Affairs, to ensure the policy’s effective implementation across various sectors.

On the same occasion, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa revealed that implementing WFH, even just one day a week, will have a significant impact on energy efficiency.

“There is a rough calculation… (WFH can save) one-fifth, approximately 20 percent (of fuel usage),” Purbaya said.

He also explained that limiting WFH to one day aims to maintain a balance between work flexibility and productivity. “Otherwise, it would be all holidays. No work done. With WFH, sometimes there are things that can’t be done well remotely,” he stated.

According to Purbaya, if WFH is applied on a specific day like Friday, it will create a longer weekend pattern. This is seen as able to encourage household activities while providing positive impacts on the domestic tourism sector.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto had also highlighted the importance of energy saving in a cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta. He urged ministers to consider WFH policies as one solution to face global pressures.
