State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi stated that the work-from-home (WFH) policy will only apply to specific sectors. The government is still reviewing the implementation plan for this policy.

The WFH policy is designed as an energy-saving measure amid rising global oil prices due to conflicts in West Asia. Nevertheless, Prasetyo emphasised that several vital sectors, such as public services, industry, and trade, must continue to operate normally. “To avoid misunderstanding, the service, industry, and trade sectors are likely not included in this policy,” Prasetyo said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Saturday, 21 March 2026.

The plan is for the WFH policy to be implemented after the Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah holiday or 2026 CE. Under this scheme, workers will work from home one day per week. Prasetyo said that the policy is still in the discussion stage and has not been finalised.

This Gerindra Party politician also requested time for the government to refine the policy. “We are currently refining and finalising it. We will communicate it to the public as soon as possible,” he said.

Previously, during a cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday, 13 March 2026, President Prabowo Subianto encouraged measures to save fuel consumption and considered the WFH policy as an anticipatory step against the impact of the global crisis.

Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that this policy applies to civil servants (ASN) and is also recommended for the private sector. “The WFH rules will be detailed. But after Eid, we will implement it. For ASN and recommendations for the private sector. But not for those working in public service sectors,” Airlangga said when met after Eid al-Fitr prayers in Jakarta on Saturday, 21 March 2026, as reported by Antara.

Airlangga said that the government will also coordinate with the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure effective implementation.

On the same occasion, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa revealed that implementing WFH for one day could provide energy efficiency impacts, particularly in saving fuel (BBM). “Rough calculation… (WFH could save) one-fifth, approximately 20 percent (of BBM usage),” Purbaya said.

Purbaya explained that the reason for implementing the policy only one day is to maintain a balance between work flexibility and productivity. According to him, there are some jobs that are not effective to do from home.
