Woods sends birthday wishes to Thai king

BANGKOK (AP): Golf's player of the year Tiger Woods has sent a birthday greeting to Thailand's revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who turns 72 on Sunday amid intense national celebrations.

Foreign ministry spokesman Don Pramudwinai told news organizations on Wednesday that United States golfing sensation Woods, whose mother is Thai, was among the overseas well-wishers who sent the king greetings.

The 72nd birthday is important in Buddhist tradition and the king is being feted in Thailand with everything from a world- record parachute jump to the opening of Bangkok's first sky-train mass transit system.
