Women's tennis team gets challenger tryout

JAKARTA: National women's tennis players will play an international challenger tournament here as a final tryout before next month's Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

The US$25,000 hardcourt tournament, organized by the Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) with financial support from the National Sports Council, will feature all national players except Romana Tedjakusuma. The California-based player is currently on tour in the U.S.

National number two and world ranked 284 Wynne Prakusya, world no. 484 Ayu Fani Damayanti and world no. 796 Septi Mende will play in the tournament from Nov. 7-Nov. 13 at the Jakarta Hilton Executive Club, Central Jakarta,

Tournament director Enggal Karyono said foreign competitors from Japan, Austria and South Korea were also entered, as well as Thailand's Tangphong Montinee. The world number 298 is likely to play in the SEA Games in the Philippines on Nov. 27-Dec. 5. -- JP
