Women's soccer team plays overseas games

JAKARTA: Chinese Taipei is the first stop for the national women's soccer squad in a series of friendlies against Asian teams.

National soccer team secretary Muhardi said on Friday the tour began on Thursday and would end on Oct. 29.

The team, which is coached by Hamdani Lubis and Toyo Haryono, are scheduled to meet the Hong Kong national team next Thursday.

Muhardi said the women's team needed more international experience before competing in next month's 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, Antara news service reported. He was also quoted as saying the women's team could contribute a medal to the national haul in the Philippines.

However, women's soccer was one of four sports given the go- ahead for the Games on Thursday by the National Sports Council, despite the latter's pessimism about their medal prospects. -- JP
