Women's groups support Mega

SURABAYA: Several women's organizations in East Java grouped under the Indonesian National Women's Forum proclaimed their support on Monday for presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Their support comes after a group of clerics affiliated with the Nadhlatul Ulama in East Java issued an edict forbidding Muslims from voting for a woman leader.

"The edict is a political commodity and counterproductive to the process of democracy in the country," said Eva K. Sundari, the coordinator of the group. -- Antara
