Women's Artistic Creativity Highlighted in Roepa Merdeka Exhibition

The Roepa Merdeka exhibition officially opened on 26 August 2026 with the theme ‘Celebrating Women, Preserving Heritage, Weaving the Future’. The event presents a variety of artworks and handicrafts as a space for expression and learning, as well as an effort to reintroduce the value of creativity and cultural heritage to the public, especially the younger generation.

Metty M Herindra, Chair of the Organising Committee and Adviser to Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) BIN, said Roepa Merdeka is an ambitious undertaking that began with a learning process for DWP BIN members in 2025. Participants who were initially beginners were encouraged to familiarise themselves with various craft skills until they were able to produce works worthy of exhibition.

‘Initially we were just learning to introduce various skills. With a little encouragement, the results from the women turned out to be something to be proud of. Without being accompanied, they sought out their own learning needs and produced extraordinary works,’ said Metty on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.

According to her, the challenges actually encouraged participants to be bolder in creating. The exhibition then became a space to show that craft activities are not merely about producing goods, but also provide inner satisfaction and appreciation for the creative process.

Roepa Merdeka also carries the spirit of independence through every work. Metty believes the process of choosing materials, motifs, and completing a piece requires struggle, perseverance, and a spirit that should be passed on to the younger generation.

‘We take the spirit that every work made has the value of struggle. It requires spirit and hard work in all fields,’ she said.

The exhibition is not only a space for appreciation but also a means of education. Around 80 per cent of the area is used as exhibition space, while visitors can learn various skills free of charge from the crafters.

A number of works are also offered for sale. Proceeds from the sale of DWP BIN works will be donated to a foundation.

Tri Suswati Tito Karnavian, Chair of TP PKK and Daily Chair of Dekranas, appreciated the organisation of the exhibition. According to her, installation exhibitions are a form of artistic expression with broad freedom of space.

‘This exhibition is not only celebrating independence, but also women. We women are the pillars of the nation; if the women are good, the nation is good,’ said Tri.
