Alya Rohali's participation in the world beauty contest has
caused great concern in the community, particularly among women.
Moreover Alya said the she also represented the Betawi people. In
fact the Betawi people have never nominated beauty pageant
candidates.

Mooryati Soedibyo who sent Alya to the Las Vegas beauty
contest never feels "enough is enough." She seems to have an
obsession that an Indonesian lady could win the contest. I am not
sure whether she is doing it with business in mind.

Also the committee has its own way to dampen the community's
outrage. They defend themselves with the argument that the rating
of the beauty queens does not only involve their physical
performance but also their intellectual capacity. Or that the
beauty contest is aimed at promoting tourism.

It is ironic when on the one hand women are vigorously talking
about emancipation and sexual harassment, while on the other hand
some are exploiting fellow women for business purposes. Why could
they not hold a contest which is based on scientific work and
intellectual achievement instead of physical beauty?
