SURABAYA: Tourist guides are mostly male because society still
cannot accept the thought of women spending long hours with
foreign tourists, according to the East Java chapter of the
Association of Tourist Guides.

Hadi Tamtomo said 90 of the 100 tourist guides registered with
the association are men, Antara reported.

Many parents have apprehension about letting their daughters
travel long distances for days with complete strangers, Hadi
said, adding that he was optimistic that this attitude would
change gradually.

Hadi said at present, East Java does not have problems finding
tourist guides to cope with the number of visitors to the
