Women legislators' quota a burden: VP

JAKARTA: Vice President Hamzah Haz expressed on Friday his
reluctance to support a minimum quota for women in political
parties.

He claimed that the quota may become a burden rather than
boost certain political parties.

"Some parties may fulfill the quota easily but others may have
a difficult time meeting the quota. So it would be better to put
aside the issue of a women's quota in political parties," he
said.

Hamzah was commenting on the endorsement of the bill on
political parties on Thursday, which rejected a quota of 30
percent for women legislators in political parties. --Antara
