The Ministry for Women Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPPA) has praised the swift action taken by Indonesia’s Sports Minister Erick Thohir in response to allegations of sexual harassment and physical violence involving an Indonesian rock climbing athlete.

The appreciation was conveyed directly by Minister Arifah Fauzi, who expressed deep concern and empathy for the case of sexual violence experienced by the rock climbing athlete.

“We appreciate the swift and responsive action from the Sports Ministry in responding to the alleged case. This prompt initial response demonstrates an important commitment to ensuring protection for athletes and creating a safe, dignified, and violence-free sports environment,” said Arifah in a written statement on Monday, 2 March 2026.

KemenPPPA stressed that victims must be placed at the centre of every handling process.

“We encourage the victim to receive comprehensive support ranging from psychological services, medical care, to legal assistance, and protection from all forms of pressure, intimidation, and stigma,” Arifah emphasised.

“We also stress the importance of handling this case professionally, transparently, and justly. In accordance with applicable legislation, particularly Law No. 12 of 2022 on Sexual Violence Crimes, the legal process must proceed with zero tolerance for perpetrators, whilst guaranteeing confidentiality and the safety of the victim,” she added.

KemenPPPA will coordinate with the Sports Ministry, relevant ministries and agencies, law enforcement authorities, and sports organisations to ensure the case is handled seriously and to strengthen the system for preventing sexual violence within the sports environment. This includes implementing athlete protection policies, establishing safe complaint mechanisms, and providing education on power dynamics.

“We call on all parties not to spread information that could harm the victim and to respect the ongoing legal process. The state is committed to ensuring that every woman and child, including athletes, are protected from violence and receive justice,” she concluded.
