Woman shot in robbery attempt

JAKARTA (JP): Security guards managed to foil a robbery attempt by two robbers on a woman who was about to deposit Rp 690 million (US$78,400) in one of the banks located at the Graha Irama building in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Friday.

The victim, Tjan Shao Ping, 30, was shot in her hip and left arm. She was rushed to Medistra Hospital on Jl. Gatot Subroto, South Jakarta for treatment.

Witnesses said Tjan, a resident of Taman Sari district in West Jakarta, had just stepped from her Kijang van at about 3:15 p.m. when two men on a motorcycle stopped next to her and tried to grab her suitcase.

When she resisted, one of the men shot Tjan in her hip. The gunshot alerted security guards, who rushed to the scene.

The guards and the two robbers were involved in a gun fight until the robbers ran out of bullets and ran to the building's basement.

The security guards pursued them to the basement and caught M. Ridwan, but the other robber managed to escape.

Ridwan, 32, a resident of Meruya Ilir, West Jakarta, was detained at the Setia Budi Police station for questioning. The police confiscated the motorcycle and a Smith & Wesson revolver and several empty shells. (07)
