Woman Pretending to Mourn in East Jakarta Steals Condolence Money
A woman is suspected of stealing condolence money after feigning mourning in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. The incident affected the family of Nyai Hasanah (45).
The event occurred on Monday, 2 March, at around 12:30 local time at the funeral home on Jalan Dukuh IV, Kampung Dukuh, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. Hasanah said the condolence money was taken in full by the perpetrator.
“Yes, the perpetrator is a woman; she claimed she was there to mourn, she knew us, and the condolence money was all gone, nothing remained,” Hasanah said at the scene.
Hasanah’s mother-in-law died at about 04:00, while the suspect arrived around 08:00. She had come from the morning as the house was quiet and mourners had not yet gathered in large numbers.
The suspect even stayed until just before the burial. While at the funeral home, she sat quietly, occasionally watching the surrounding activity.
To the family, the woman claimed to be a friend of the deceased’s sister-in-law and described herself as a “comrade in the struggle” when taking social assistance, such as staples and the KJP (Kartu Jakarta Pintar).
Hasanah did not suspect anything because she felt the suspect knew her family. The woman then stole the condolence money after claiming she needed to use the toilet.
The family only realised the loss around 12:30. Residents attempted to pursue the suspect, but she had already fled.
Video of the woman went viral on social media. CCTV footage shows the suspect running out after carrying out the act.
The alleged offender is also claimed to have carried out similar acts at several locations, including Jalan Damai Lubang Buaya on 22 December 2025 and Jalan Bambu Kuning, Bambu Apus, on 4 February 2026.
Police Investigation
Authorities are investigating the case by visiting the scene of the crime to conduct initial inquiries. Officers have taken statements from the family and several witnesses and are reviewing CCTV footage around the area.
