Woman jumps from RSCM's 3rd floor

JAKARTA (JP): A woman, who had just given birth to a baby boy,
suffered severe injuries when she jumped from the third floor of
Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) in Central Jakarta.

Tri Darwati, 38, had delivered the baby about 1:30 a.m.
Saturday but reportedly panicked and jumped out of her bed when
nurses came to feed and bathe her about 6 a.m.

Reports said Tri sprang from her bed screaming, ran toward the
window and jumped out. A first-floor balcony stopped her fall but
when hospital staff reached her she was unconscious.

Tri broke her neck and legs. She is being treated at the
hospital's intensive care unit and remains in a critical
condition.

"She just freaked out when we tried to check on how she was
doing," one of the nurses, who asked for anonymity, said.

Some nurses said the woman was probably hallucinating and
mentally stressed out after the difficult labor process.

"Her baby boy was positioned upside down (inside the womb).
After about four hours of labor, the baby and Tri were eventually
saved," one of the nurses said.

Screams

Tri's husband, Supar, 42, seemed baffled by the incident.

"This is our fourth child so I do not know why she reacted
this way," Supar said tearfully.

An eyewitness, Misniah, said she was washing dishes near her
kiosks when she heard screams.

"I looked up and saw a woman falling. I heard her screaming
when she jumped out of the window. I thought she was a mentally
ill patient," Misniah said.

Supar said he feared that his wife might die as doctors have
said she was in a very critical condition.

"If she's gone who's going to take care of me and the
children," the 42-year-old street vendor in Tanah Abang, Central
Jakarta, said.

He said his wife usually helped him prepare the merchandise to
be sold at Tanah Abang market.

"She was also working as a seller of rujak (fruit salad) at
our house in Bali Matraman, Manggarai, South Jakarta."

When asked whether his wife jumped because she was under
pressure or the family was facing financial difficulties, Supar
just kept nodding his head.

"Maybe ... I don't know for sure. It is true that we don't
have much money. But, still, I can't understand why she would
hurt herself like this. I just trust in God. I believe He will
answer my prayers," he whispered. (edt)
