Woman in West Jakarta Arrested for Stealing Friend's Property Worth Rp300 Million to Pay Online Loan Debts
The Grogol Petamburan Police Station arrested a woman with initials DS, 42, after she brazenly stole property from her own friend’s home. The theft, driven by online lending (pinjol) debt entanglement, resulted in the victim losing approximately Rp300 million.
Grogol Petamburan Police Chief AKP Reza Aditya revealed that the suspect carried out the thefts in stages between September and December 2025 at the victim’s residence located in Tanjung Duren Utara, West Jakarta.
“Approximately Rp300 million in material losses, in the form of jewellery and luxury goods,” Reza told reporters on Monday (9 March).
The long-standing friendship was exploited by DS to monitor the victim’s home situation. Using this closeness, the suspect quietly duplicated her friend’s house keys to facilitate easier entry.
“The suspect duplicated the house keys. All the house keys were duplicated, and eventually, when the victim was not at home, the suspect entered and committed theft,” Reza explained.
DS’s actions were so methodical that the victim became confused. As items disappeared one by one mysteriously, the victim initially suspected being targeted by supernatural theft.
However, suspicion of someone close eventually emerged. The victim decided to install hidden CCTV cameras in her bedroom.
“The victim’s suspicions initially pointed to supernatural matters. However, after installing CCTV in her home, it was finally revealed that the thief was suspect DS,” he added.
Police arrested DS on Friday (6 March) after obtaining evidence from surveillance camera recordings. The Police Sergeant for Criminal Investigation at Grogol Petamburan Police Station, AKP Alexander Tengbunan, recounted the emotional moment when the victim questioned the suspect’s reasons for betraying the trust given to her.
The suspect’s answer proved shocking. To someone she had long known to be kind, DS claimed that the victim’s very kindness was what enabled her to commit the crime.
“The suspect answered that precisely because the victim was too kind, she was able to commit this crime,” Alex said.
For her actions, DS now faces imprisonment. She is charged under Article 477 of the Criminal Code with a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.
