Woman in West Jakarta Arrested for Stealing Friend's Property Worth 300 Million Rupiah
A 42-year-old woman, identified as DS, was arrested by police on suspicion of stealing property worth approximately 300 million rupiah from her close friend. In statements to police, DS admitted to committing the theft because she was burdened by online loan (pinjol) debts.
“The material loss amounts to approximately 300 million rupiah, in the form of jewellery and luxury goods,” said Grogol Petamburan Police Precinct Chief AKP Reza Aditya.
The suspect carried out her theft operations from September through December 2025 at the victim’s residence on Jalan Tanjung Duren Utara in West Jakarta. Reza explained that the suspect and victim had maintained a close and long-standing friendship.
Key House Duplication
The suspect exploited this closeness to steal the victim’s valuables by duplicating the keys to her friend’s house. “The suspect duplicated all the house keys, and when the victim was away, the suspect would enter the home and commit the theft,” Reza stated.
In the initial stages of discovering her missing items, the victim suspected supernatural theft. However, she eventually grew suspicious of those around her and installed CCTV cameras in her bedroom.
“The victim’s suspicions initially pointed towards supernatural causes, but after installing CCTV in her home, it was revealed that the thief was the suspect DS,” he said.
Based on the CCTV footage, police conducted an investigation and successfully apprehended the suspect on Friday (6 March). During questioning, the victim asked the suspect directly why she would betray such kindness. The victim stated she had treated her friend very well.
“The suspect responded that it was precisely because the victim was so kind to her that she committed this crime,” said Alexander Tengbunan, Chief of Criminal Investigation at Grogol Petamburan Police Precinct.
As a result of her actions, suspect DS has been charged under Article 477 of the Indonesian Criminal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years.
