A woman from Lubuk Dalam, Siak Regency, Riau Province, Susi Yanti Br Sinaga (22), who became a victim of an illegal job recruitment scam to Cambodia, has died after receiving intensive care treatment at a local hospital.

Fanny Wahyu Kurniawan, Head of the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Service Centre (BP3MI) in Riau, stated that Susi had previously undergone intensive care in the ICU at Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital in Phnom Penh. However, her condition deteriorated until her death.

“She was declared dead on Sunday morning, 8 March,” Fanny said in Pekanbaru on Monday.

Regarding the repatriation of her remains, Fanny explained that the Indonesian Embassy handed the matter to the family. The family then requested assistance from the Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection (KP2MI) to process the repatriation of her body.

KP2MI/BP3MI will continue to facilitate the repatriation of the remains to her hometown once she arrives in Indonesia. The office will then contact the Siak Regency Labour Office to communicate with the local government.

Susi was initially promised employment in Malaysia, but was ultimately taken to Cambodia. “The victim travelled using only a passport, which means she travelled illegally,” Fanny said.

Fanny emphasised that the government is taking action in handling cases of non-procedural migrant workers. She urged the public not to be easily tempted by foreign job offers without going through official mechanisms.
