Woman freed after killing lesbian
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): A Malaysian factory worker accused of
murdering her housemate who made lesbian advances on her has been
freed after a court accepted her claim of self-defense, The
Sunday Star newspaper said.
Junaini Mohamed Yusof, 34, grasped her lawyer's hands and
tearfully thanked him after a seven-man jury ruled Saturday that
she had not deliberately killed Fauziah Ahmad, 34.
The trial -- in Malaysia's northern Penang state high court,
was one of the shortest murder cases heard in the country --
lasting just eight days after Junaini claimed Fauziah had tried
to rape her before the killing on Oct. 11, 1991.
The delay in the case coming to trial was due to a backlog in
criminal cases in Malaysia. Junaini, dressed in attire common to
religious Moslems, said she would turn to prayers in a bid to put
the incident behind her.
