Woman Dies After Attending Religious Gathering in Bogor, Police Deny Crowd Crush

A 49-year-old woman died after attending a religious gathering at a building in Leuwiliang, Bogor, West Java. Police have denied that the death was caused by a crowd crush. Video footage showed the venue packed with worshippers, mostly women, jostling and pushing against each other at the entrance in a chaotic atmosphere. Leuwiliang Police Chief Maryanto confirmed the victim had attended the gathering but dismissed reports that she died due to the crush. “We traced it yesterday and found that this woman had a history of illness. A family member who visited confirmed this,” Maryanto said when contacted on Saturday (25 July 2026). The religious gathering took place on Friday (24 July) around 4 a.m. WIB, though it was originally scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Maryanto noted that many worshippers had arrived on Thursday night and stayed overnight to wait for the speaker. “My officers had been on standby since the afternoon, monitoring the situation from outside the front door,” he said. The victim initially fainted and received immediate treatment from the event’s medical team. Maryanto stated that after coordinating with the committee, he instructed that the victim be rushed to the hospital, but her life could not be saved. The family also mentioned that the victim had been feeling unwell before attending the gathering. Maryanto assured that the building’s capacity was sufficient for the number of attendees, and the situation was monitored until the event concluded.
