Police arrested a woman identified as AK, suspected of stealing a motorcycle belonging to a resident in Gang Masjid, Gedong Village, Pasar Rebo Subdistrict, East Jakarta. AKP Lili, head of Pasar Rebo Police Station’s Criminal Investigation Unit, stated that the suspect was apprehended at a rental house in Pasar Rebo after her identity was established through investigation. ‘We identified the suspect and carried out the arrest today at a rental house in Pasar Rebo,’ Lili said during confirmation in Jakarta on Thursday. The motorcycle theft occurred on Tuesday (26 May) and was captured on CCTV. The footage subsequently went viral on social media. In the video, the suspect was seen walking alone around the scene, observing the surroundings before stealing the parked motorcycle from a resident’s yard once she confirmed the area was unattended. Lili explained the theft began when the suspect passed by the victim’s house, identified as RB, and noticed an unattended motorcycle. ‘Due to the deserted surroundings, the suspect proceeded to steal the motorcycle there,’ Lili said. The victim reported the theft to Pasar Rebo Police Station upon realising the vehicle was missing. Police then investigated by reviewing CCTV footage from the area. Based on the investigation, officers identified the suspect and her hiding place, swiftly arresting her at the rental house where she was staying. According to Lili, the suspect acted alone. Investigators are currently looking into whether she committed other thefts in different locations. She also noted the suspect did not use a T-key to steal the motorcycle, as the keys were left in the vehicle, making it easy for her to take it. ‘She didn’t use a T-key because the motorcycle keys were still in the ignition. She has previously stolen vehicles using the same method of leaving keys in place. She made no denial and confessed to her actions,’ Lili explained. Police have urged the public to be vigilant when parking vehicles and ensure motorcycle keys are not left behind, even when parked at home. Lili stated that small oversights like leaving keys in the motorcycle can encourage theft.
