Washington (ANTARA) - Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated on Friday (27/3) that the US will hold a meeting with Iran at least “this week”, while President Donald Trump is reportedly seeking a “peace agreement” amid the ongoing US-Israel attacks.

“We expect there to be a meeting this week and certainly hope it will happen. Ships are starting to pass through; this is a positive sign, and I think the president wants a peace deal,” Steve Witkoff said in his statement at an investment forum in Miami.

“This is what I mean by negotiation, and we will not stop until this process is complete. We have also proposed that,” he added.

Meanwhile, separately, Trump claimed that Iran wants to hold talks.

“They have been destroyed. They want to talk, and we want it too; now they want to make a deal,” he said.

Foreign Minister Marco Rubio stated that Washington expects to conclude its military campaign against Iran “in weeks, not months”, and the US can achieve its objectives without deploying troops on the ground.

The US and Israel have conducted airstrikes against Iran since 28 February, killing more than 1,340 people.

Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage, as well as disrupting global markets and aviation.

Additionally, at least 13 US military members have been killed since the war began, in a conflict that has driven up energy prices and affected shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
