Microsoft founder Bill Gates has issued a stern warning regarding the future of artificial intelligence (AI) development. In a statement accompanying a UN Sustainable Development Goals progress report, Gates emphasised that AI has the potential to be a great equaliser or, conversely, to widen the global inequality gap.

Gates, having lived through the era of the personal computer revolution, stated that the current AI phenomenon feels significantly different. According to him, this technology is moving faster and reaching more people than any previous innovation. However, he warned that if AI development is left entirely to the market, the technology will only be designed by and for the wealthiest people in the world.

The billionaire argued that decisions made in the next 12 to 18 months will be decisive for the future. These decisions will determine whether AI provides benefits to those who already possess everything or is able to reach the communities that need it most.

He added that harnessing AI for good will not happen by chance, but rather requires deliberate effort and appropriate regulation.

As a concrete step, the Gates Foundation has announced plans to spend at least US$1 billion (approximately Rp15.4 trillion) over the next two years to expand access to AI-based solutions.

The report also outlines three main proposals to ensure the positive impact of AI.

In addition to its potential benefits, Gates also highlighted the real risks posed by AI. He warned that the transition to the AI era will be one of the most turbulent periods in human history, and unfortunately, the world is currently deemed insufficiently prepared.

Risks highlighted include the permanent loss of entry-level and mid-level jobs, as well as the potential for misuse by malicious actors for fraud, disinformation, cyberattacks, and even bioterrorism. Gates also expressed concern regarding the possibility of AI models acting beyond human control and the negative impact on child development, where AI companions might replace human relationships.
