Without Protests, Bali's 2026 May Day Filled with Health Walk Involving 1,200 Participants
The commemoration of International Labour Day or May Day on 1 May was held differently from the usual. While it is typically associated with protest actions in various regions, the celebration in Bali was packaged more casually through a health walk attended by around 1,200 participants from labour unions, business owners, and the government. Bali Governor Wayan Koster personally flagged off the participants at the Bali May Day 2026 event held at Renon Field, Denpasar, on Friday (1/5/2026). “There are around 1,200 participants from labour unions, business owners, and the government,” said Koster after delivering the flag-off speech for May Day at Renon Field, Friday (1/5/2026). He also emphasised that this year’s celebration proceeded in a conducive manner, despite previous circulating information regarding labour actions. “Unlike the issues that had circulated, the workers still celebrated in an orderly and full of camaraderie manner,” he added. According to Koster, the May Day commemoration should serve as a momentum to strengthen unity, not as a forum to express aspirations through demonstrations. “By holding May Day like this, it is more elegant and more beneficial,” he stated. The series of 2026 May Day events were filled with various activities, such as a leisurely walk, affordable market, and health examinations. The activities were enthusiastically welcomed by the participants.
