Wiranto Remembers Try Sutrisno: Vice-President Who Always Prioritised the People

JAKARTA — Wiranto, Special Advisor to the President for Politics and Security, has remembered the sixth Vice-President of Indonesia, Try Sutrisno, as a leader who consistently placed the interests of the people above personal and group interests.

“His simplicity, adherence to the constitution, his struggle that always defended truth and guided by his convictions, that as Vice-President at that time, he always prioritised the interests of the people over personal and group interests,” said Wiranto whilst paying respects at Try Sutrisno’s residence on Monday, 2 March 2026.

According to him, Try Sutrisno was a figure who always considered the best course of action for society whilst carrying out his state duties.

“And I believe that is an attitude we should indeed emulate. An attitude that should be followed by both soldiers and colleagues who currently hold positions in state offices,” said Wiranto.

Try Sutrisno passed away at the age of 90 at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto Hospital in Jakarta on Monday at 06:58 WIB.

His son, Taufik Dwi Cahyono, stated that his father’s health declined as he advanced in age.

“My father’s condition was due to his age—everything deteriorates at that age. There was no specific illness. It was simply a matter of age, with a decline in his respiratory capacity and the like,” said Taufik at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto on Monday.

The RSPAD medical team, along with the presidential team, provided maximum care, he said.

“(He had been receiving treatment since) 16 February. So his appetite suddenly dropped, he was brought here, with ups and downs, given medicine and food,” said Taufik.
