Winning KWP Award, Lia Istifhama Commits to Strengthening Public Policy from the Regions
Jakarta, VIVA – Lia Istifhama, a member of the DPD RI from East Java, has received the KWP Award in the category of Senator Strengthening Public Policy. The award was presented by the Coordinating Body of Parliamentary Journalists (DPR, MPR, DPD RI) as recognition of her contributions to enhancing policies based on societal aspirations. In her statement, Ning Lia, as she is affectionately known, expressed gratitude and stressed that the award is not merely a symbol but a reminder to remain consistent in advocating for policies that favour the public. “This award motivates me to continue delivering public policies that truly stem from the real needs of society,” she said, quoted on Friday, 17 April 2026. She explained that the role of DPD RI members extends beyond the central level, serving as a bridge between regions and the central government. Therefore, her approach involves actively going down to the grassroots, which she calls “mudun ngisor”. Through this method, Lia regularly absorbs community aspirations, listens directly to on-the-ground issues, and dialogues with local governments. The results of these aspirations are then brought to the central level to be advocated for in the form of policies. “The logic is simple: good policies must start from the bottom. We listen to the community and local governments, then push them to become central policies,” she clarified. As a member of DPD RI’s Committee III, Lia focuses on issues of education, health, and social welfare. She believes there are still many problems in these sectors that require serious attention, especially in East Java. “Education, health, and employment services must continue to be strengthened because they concern the sustainability of national development,” she asserted. Besides being active in parliament, Ning Lia is known as a responsive figure to current issues, both in the field and in digital spaces. Her relaxed yet communicative style makes her easily accepted by various groups, including the younger generation. As a new face in the DPD RI, Ning Lia recorded a significant vote tally in the recent election, reaching 2,739,123 votes. This achievement demonstrates the high level of public trust in her as a representative of East Java.
