Indramayu Police have named the driver of a wing box truck as a suspect in a fatal accident on the Pantura route that resulted in 12 deaths. The suspect, identified only by the initial A and a resident of Purwakarta, West Java, was taken into custody following a series of investigations and witness examinations, according to Indramayu Police Chief AKBP Mochamad Fajar Gemilang on Friday (17/7). The suspect is charged under Article 310 of Law Number 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation, which carries a maximum penalty of six years’ imprisonment. The deadly collision, which occurred on Sunday (12/7) at a turning point in Kiajaran Kulon Village, Lohbener District, involved three vehicles: a pickup truck carrying a wedding party of 18 people, the wing box truck with registration number B 9260 TEV, and a flatbed truck with registration number E 8846 BA. The incident began when the open pickup truck, bearing plate number E 8559 RB, was travelling from Jakarta towards Cirebon. The group was returning to Cempeh Village in Lelea District, near the accident site. The pickup stopped in the right lane to make a turn towards Kiajaran Kulon Village when it was struck from behind by the wing box truck. The force of the impact pushed the pickup into the oncoming lane, where it was immediately hit by the flatbed truck travelling from Cirebon to Jakarta. The collision threw the passengers from the pickup, killing 12 and leaving six others hospitalised. Indramayu Regent Lucky Hakim visited the victims’ homes on Monday (13/7) evening to pay his respects and provide assistance to the twelve heirs. A police forensic team conducted a crime scene investigation to determine the exact chronology and cause of the incident.
