A new chapter of United States sanctions against Iran opens a broader phase of economic pressure.

Washington is no longer only targeting Tehran directly, but is also pursuing countries, banks, and companies that still provide trade and financing channels for the Iranian economy.

The aim is to make the cost of dealing with Iran greater than the economic benefits.

The operation announced by the administration of United States President Donald Trump under the name “Economic Exclusion Operation” expands the scope of secondary sanctions.

This policy threatens parties that facilitate trade with Iran or move funds for the country with losing access to the dollar-based financial system.

At the same time, around 60 individuals and entities as well as vessels linked to Iran’s oil sector, nuclear programme, and missile programme are also being targeted.

Washington is also tightening restrictions on a number of channels used by Tehran to access digital assets, gold, technology, aviation, and shipping.

Quoted from Aljazeera, Tuesday (25/8/2026), US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent summarised the objective by saying that Washington wants to “sever every economic artery” that keeps the Iranian regime connected to the world.
