Will Eid al-Fitr 2026 Be Celebrated on the Same Day? Here's the Prediction
JAKARTA — The prospect of Eid al-Fitr 2026 being celebrated simultaneously across Indonesia remains uncertain.
Differences in the methods used by the government and Islamic organisations to determine the beginning of Syawal mean that the potential for varying celebration dates remains open.
Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri is estimated to fall in the third week of March 2026.
Muhammadiyah has already established that 1 Syawal 1447 H, or Eid al-Fitr 2026, falls on Friday, 20 March 2026. This determination refers to the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Declaration, which uses the hisab method through the Single Global Hijri Calendar (KHGT).
In its calculation, the conjunction preceding Syawal occurs on Thursday, 19 March 2026 at 01:23 UTC.
Meanwhile, the government has not yet formally set the date for Eid al-Fitr 2026. Confirmation of 1 Syawal will be decided through an isbat hearing scheduled for Thursday, 19 March 2026.
The Indonesian Hijri Calendar published by the Religious Affairs Ministry estimates Eid al-Fitr will fall on Saturday, 21 March 2026. However, this date remains a prediction and could change depending on the outcome of the isbat hearing.
In this hearing, the determination of the beginning of Syawal is made through both the hisab method and rukyatul hilal (moon sighting). If the moon is not sighted, then Ramadan is completed as 30 days.
