Will AI Cause Widespread Job Losses? OpenAI CEO Offers Reassurances
The emergence of ChatGPT as a pioneer in generative AI has triggered a wave of increasingly widespread layoffs across various industrial sectors.
Amidst public anxiety, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a public statement via the X platform, asserting that his company has no intention of replacing human roles.
“We want to build tools that empower and enhance human capabilities, not create entities that replace humans,” he wrote in early May.
This statement comes as the US technology industry is being hit by a brutal wave of layoffs.
Various companies, from large to small, have been affected by workforce reductions. Notably, many company leaders have openly cited AI as the primary cause.
One of the most discussed cases is that of the engineers at King, the studio that develops the game Candy Crush.
They were tasked with building an AI system to automatically create game levels. However, once the system was developed, the engineers were immediately laid off because their jobs had been taken over by the technology they had designed.
Public concern has intensified with statements from other AI company executives, including Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic.
In response to this wave of pessimism, Altman spoke out again. According to him, the widespread concern about job losses is a misguided view if viewed from a long-term perspective.
He believes that AI will make many people more productive, while also making them feel more satisfied and fulfilled in their jobs.
However, Altman does not ignore the fact that this technology will drive major changes. He acknowledges that there will be a significant transition period, in which people will shift to new types of jobs that may be very different from what exists today.
In his vision of the future, Altman describes a more ideal world thanks to AI. Those who are enthusiastic and ambitious will have more attractive opportunities to pursue.
Meanwhile, for those who do not want to work hard, a comfortable life will still be affordable because the AI-powered civilization, Altman claims, will be able to guarantee a prosperous standard of living for all.
